What is pedagogical remediation?

Pedagogical remediation is a means of compensating for learning deficiencies. The diagnosis of these difficulties is carried out during assessments and is used to propose corrections and improvements. In short, it is a matter of rectifying a learning situation where the student has not assimilated a content.

Remediation in practice?

The diagnosis that allows us to say whether there is a need for pedagogical remediation comes from formative assessment. It is a type of evaluation that highlights when knowledge is not properly mastered.

It is then a matter of presenting the information, once again, but in a different form. When the information is initially poorly understood, an alternative or complementary means of learning is used. Naturally, when you have not understood a piece of information, your reflex is to look for other sources of information. This is the principle that drives remediation.
Here are a few ways to remediate: change the media, change the questioning method, give clues, send feedback.

Why is digital learning particularly effective in educational remediation?

Increasing the number of ways to diagnose gaps
Digital learning allows for a precise diagnosis because it offers a wide range of evaluation methods:  quizzes, fill-in-the-blank texts, elements to be linked, … The diagnosis can be not only quantitative (has a notion been acquired or not ?)  but also qualitative (by defining a type of error).

Acceleration of remediation
The automatic recording and processing of activities considerably accelerate remediation compared to human processing. This has the effect of empowering students in the progression of their learning.

Differentiation of learning journeys
The digitization of learning allows for automatic remediation. They are based on conditional tests according to previous answers. If the previous module is successful, then students continue their journey; if not, they are offered a different approach to the previous notion. Remedial measures can also be taken depending on the type of difficulty encountered. The sequence of conditions leads to differentiated learning.

For example, in a numerical question where the unit must also be indicated, the remediation (the next element seen by the student) will depend on the type of error. If the numerical value is wrong, the remediation will focus on calculations and numerical problem-solving methods, whereas if the unit is wrong, the remediation will focus on unit definitions and conversion tables.

The future of remediation: Artificial Intelligence will allow for individualized learning paths

The large amount of data produced by digital learning is the raw material of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. Remedial automatisms will probably no longer be pre-written in the years to come but deduced by an AI from the sum of past experiences. The proposed remediation will then be the one that will statistically give you the maximum chance of reaching your personal learning objectives. We speak of adaptive learning.
